Many years ago, my village was very poor. The villagers had to work hard in the fields all day and could hardly make ends meet. Their lives were simple and they were in need of many things. Many people had to live in houses made of straw and mud, and few families had a radio or a TV set. However, in spite of the shortages, the villagers managed to send their children to school and college. They hoped that with an education of science and technology, their children could find a way of bettering their lives .
The children have met their parents ‘ wishes. When they came back from college or technical high school, they introduced new fanning methods, which resulted in bumper crops. They also helped the villagers grow cash crops for export. Soon, the lifestyle of my village changed. Today, people live in brick houses. In the evening, they can listen to the news on the radio or watch TV for entertainment. Sometimes they go to town on their motorbikes to do some shopping or to visit their friends .
“ Our lives have changed a lot thanks to the knowledge our children brought home, ” said an old farmer, “ and I always tell my grandchildren to study harder so that they can do even more for the village than their parents did. ”

Nhiều năm trước đây, làng tôi rất nghèo. Dân làng phải làm lụng khó khăn vất vả cả ngày trên cánh đồng mà hầu hết không đủ sống. Cuộc sống của họ đạm bạc và họ cần nhiều thứ. Nhiều người phải sống trong nhà tranh vách đất, và hầu hết chẳng có mái ấm gia đình nào có đài hay tivi. Mặc dù đời sống còn nhiều thiếu thốn, dân làng vẫn nỗ lực cho con đến trường và đi học ĐH. Họ hy vọng rằng với học vấn về khoa học và công nghệ tiên tiến, con cháu cùa họ hoàn toàn có thể tìm cách làm cho đời sống tốt đẹp hơn .
Con cái thực thi được mong ước của cha mẹ. Khi chúng tốt nghiệp ĐH hay tầm trung kỹ thuật trở lại làng, chúng đã ra mắt giải pháp canh tác mới đem lại những vụ mùa bội thu. Chúng cũng giúp dân làng trồng cây thương phẩm để xuất khẩu. Chẳng bao lâu sau đời sống ở làng tôi đã đổi khác. Ngày nay người dân đã có nhà gạch. Tối đến họ hoàn toàn có thể nghe tin tức trên đài hay xem tivi để vui chơi. Thỉnh thoảng họ đi xe máy ra phố shopping hay thăm bạn hữu .

“Cuộc sống của chúng tôi đã thay đổi nhiều nhờ kiến thức mà bọn trẻ mang về”, một lão nông nói,
“và tôi luôn bảo con cháu mình phải học hành chăm chỉ hơn để có thể đóng góp cho xóm làng nhiều
hơn bố mẹ chúng trước đây.”

1. What was life like in the author’s village many years ago? (Cuộc sống nhiều năm về trước như thế nào trong ngôi làng của tác giả?)

=> It was poor and simple .

2. Why did the villagers want to send their children to school and college in spite of their shortages? (Tại sao người dân làng muốn cho con cái họ đến trường và đi học đại học dù cho cuộc sống có thiếu thốn?)

=> Because they hoped that with an education of science and technology, their children could find a way of bettering their lives .

3. How did the children help improve the lifestyle in the village when they finished college or technical high school? (Con cái giúp cải thiện cuộc sống trong ngôi làng như thế nào khi họ học xong đại học hay trường trung cấp kĩ thuật?)

=> They introduced new farming methods which resulted in bumper crops. They also helped to grow cash crops for export .

4. What did an old farmer say about the effect of the knowledge the young people brought home? (Một lão nông đã nói gì về hiệu quả của kiến thức mà những người trẻ tuổi mang về làng?)

=> He said their lives had changed a lot thanks to the knowledge their children brought home from technical high schools or colleges .

5. What exactly did he tell his grandchildren? (Ông ấy đã nói gì với bậc con cháu?)

=> He told his grandchildren, ” study harder so that you can even do more for the village than your parents did ” .

How can people with an education help make the life of their community better?
(Người ta có thể giúp cuộc sống cộng động tốt hơn bằng học vấn như thế nào?)

=> People with an education can help to make the life of the community better by applying new methods, new technique and knowledge in working. And thanks to this, the work gets more effective and produces better results .
